Pediatrics Clerkship

pediatrician

This is a clerkship I was extremely excited about, because it was a field I was seriously considering going into! In fact, up until my third year Ob/Gyn rotation I was almost positive I would be a pediatrician some day. The clerkship was a lot of fun and definitely made my decision difficult, but as you already know Ob/Gyn ended up winning my heart…but not because Pedi let me down. Pediatrics This specialty is focused […]

Imprinted Experiences

Newborn

Coming into medical school I think many of us have an image in our head of all the great things we’ll get to do. In general most of them probably include a collage of things like saving lives, using defibrillators, performing surgery…you know, TV medical drama-esque stuff. In reality, medical students very rarely save anyone’s life and generally the extent of our surgical experience stops at holding bladder blades and retractors. That’s not to say […]

Reflections on Third Year

Doctor & Laptop

The past year has been one of unexpected and broad personal discovery, involving aspects of heartbreaking disappointment and sheer, unsurpassable joy. Since July of last year, when I started third year, I’ve met amazing people, learned incredible things (including learning how much I don’t know) and been afforded unique opportunities. I can confidently say that the third year of medical school was one of the most life-changing years of my life. Not only did I […]

Hoarders: Med Student Edition

White Coat WTF

I’ve expressed my disdain regarding wearing my white lab coat many times around here – it’s hot, it’s uncomfortable, it’s germy – but something I’ve never allowed myself to admit is that sometimes it can be kind of useful (SOMETIMES. like when it’s not being annoying…or stiff…or disgusting). The pockets are just under 14 light years deep, so if you need to carry a galaxy or two with you into a patient room or 14 Red Bulls and […]

Psychiatry Clerkship

Psychiatry

I finished my Psychiatry Rotation a couple of weeks ago and figured now would be a good time to recap the Freudian experience. Psychiatry Psychiatry is a specialty that deals with diagnosing and treating mental disorders. The difference between a Psychiatrist and Psychologist is in both training and job description – Psychiatrists have medical degrees (either MD or DO) and the prescribing abilities consistent with such. Psychologists typically have a PhD and do not prescribe […]

Internal Medicine Clerkship

Team Discussion

I started my Internal Medicine clerkship in July and my shelf exam will be on August 25th. Since I’m just over half-way done I figured it would be a good time to do a recap of the past few weeks. Internal Medicine Internal Medicine is a specialty that primarily deals with diseases in adults. As our clerkship director put it, I-Med is basically everything minus pregnancy, kids and surgery. It’s a very broad specialty and not […]

Life As I Know It…

is about to drastically change. My job is no longer simply learning about the basic science of disorders and regurgitating answers on exams…starting next week I get my first real taste of what a doctor does. My first clinical rotation is Internal Medicine and I am very excited to see the ins and outs of hospital work. I’m ready to get into the nitty gritty of what I came to medical school for in the first place […]

Trip To Betty Ford Institute In My Future

I was three and she was 24 when we left – for years the alcohol and drugs precipitated the fighting, which brought on the feelings of guilt, which inevitably lead to more drinking. It was a vicious cycle that had to be broken and, no matter how much my he begged my mom not to leave with me, she knew we couldn’t stay.    He’s a good man, my dad – a smart, […]

About The Author

I’m an Ob/Gyn resident (that means I went to medical school to become a doctor) and now I'm working like a crazy person to learn my trade before I'm on my own in the wild. Once upon a time I birthed a couple of babies of my own, they're friggin' adorable twin toddlers now. My life story through November 2010 can be viewed here. The events in the many years following can be summed up as wedding bells, books, exams, babies, and doctoring. I only started this blog in hopes of landing a role in a Lifetime movie so I could quit medicine and move to Hollywood, so if you wouldn't take medical advice from Angelina Jolie, you shouldn't take it from me. I may not even be a real person. In fact, I'm probably a spambot. Or possibly a 15 yo boy blogging from a dingy basement. If you're really interested you can read more about me here. If you have any questions or want to guest post contact me.
