Specialty Choice – MomMD Cross Post

Shift Change on MomMD

A few weeks back I tweeted something to the effect of “I’m SO excited for my Ob/Gyn rotation, but terrified I’m going to fall in love with it. I don’t want to love Ob/Gyn!” My tweet referenced the underlying fear I harbor of loving a specialty that is demanding or lacks family friendliness. One of the first responses I received was along the lines of “Being miserable every single day at work is not worth […]

Internal Medicine Clerkship

Team Discussion

I started my Internal Medicine clerkship in July and my shelf exam will be on August 25th. Since I’m just over half-way done I figured it would be a good time to do a recap of the past few weeks. Internal Medicine Internal Medicine is a specialty that primarily deals with diseases in adults. As our clerkship director put it, I-Med is basically everything minus pregnancy, kids and surgery. It’s a very broad specialty and not […]

A Medical Student’s Role

As a medical student on the inpatient Internal Medicine floor my job is not just to learn about history-taking and practice my physical exam skills, it’s to be a part of the team caring for real, live patients. I actually have the chance to make a difference. Since I’m a noob I am usually only assigned to a couple of patients at a time. This small patient load plus my low magnitude of responsibility means I […]

What Kind of Doctor Do You Want To Be?

Photo Credit: digitalart Since the day I started medical school…actually probably more accurately since the day I started telling people I wanted to go to medical school…people have been asking me what kind of doctor I want to be and I have been giving them a generic answer of “I really don’t know, but today I’m interested in XYZ.” Understandably, the further I get into school the more common this question becomes and, ironically, the […]

Life As I Know It…

is about to drastically change. My job is no longer simply learning about the basic science of disorders and regurgitating answers on exams…starting next week I get my first real taste of what a doctor does. My first clinical rotation is Internal Medicine and I am very excited to see the ins and outs of hospital work. I’m ready to get into the nitty gritty of what I came to medical school for in the first place […]

Medical School in the UK, Residency in the US

Today’s Medical Education Monday post is one I have been looking forward to reading since he offered to write it for me a few weeks ago! Nick Bennett (@peds_id_doc) is a Pediatric Infectious Disease Fellow in Syracuse, NY and he has a very unique perspective to share with the Mind On Medicine readers today. Dr. Bennett went to medical school (and got his PhD…overachiever…does that mean we call him Doctor Dr. Bennett? I think it […]

What Is USMLE Step 1, Anyway?

I’ve been tweeting things like USMLE, Step 1, ginormous exam, boards and ohmygoshimfreakingout a lot lately and today it occurred to me that a good number of my followers are not in medicine and may have absolutely no clue what I’m talking about. I wrote a little about USMLE in my Medical Education in the US post, but I thought I’d share a bit more detail about the reason behind why I won’t be tweeting […]

Why I Don’t Blog Anonymously

In my last post, the one in which I temporarily lose my mind and decide to take on a slightly controversial and hugely important subject as my next blogging endeavor, I discussed how it seems some are lagging behind in seeing the benefits of Social Media in the realm of Medical Education. Today I’m going to talk about what I see as an important aspect of my personal Social Media experience – anonymity, or lack […]

About The Author

I'm an ObGyn. I started this blog as a medical student (some would call that doctor school) and now I'm working as an Ob/Gyn, which is seriously the coolest job ever. I'm a twin mom and recently added a baby brudder to the mix. My life story through November 2010 can be viewed here. The events in the many years following can be summed up as wedding bells, books, exams, babies, and doctoring. I started this blog in hopes of landing a role in a Lifetime movie so I could quit medicine and move to Hollywood, but that hasn't happened...so if you wouldn't take medical advice from Angelina Jolie, you shouldn't take it from me. I may not even be a real person. In fact, I'm probably a spambot. Or possibly a 15 yo boy blogging from a dingy basement. If you're really interested you can read more about me here. If you have any questions or want to guest post contact me.
