Hoarders: Med Student Edition

White Coat WTF

I’ve expressed my disdain regarding wearing my white lab coat many times around here – it’s hot, it’s uncomfortable, it’s germy – but something I’ve never allowed myself to admit is that sometimes it can be kind of useful (SOMETIMES. like when it’s not being annoying…or stiff…or disgusting). The pockets are just under 14 light years deep, so if you need to carry a galaxy or two with you into a patient room or 14 Red Bulls and […]

Psychiatry Clerkship

Psychiatry

I finished my Psychiatry Rotation a couple of weeks ago and figured now would be a good time to recap the Freudian experience. Psychiatry Psychiatry is a specialty that deals with diagnosing and treating mental disorders. The difference between a Psychiatrist and Psychologist is in both training and job description – Psychiatrists have medical degrees (either MD or DO) and the prescribing abilities consistent with such. Psychologists typically have a PhD and do not prescribe […]

Stop! Or I’ll…Dump Water On Your Head

Water Bottle

A psychiatrist I was working with was recently talking to some families about the importance of following through with so-called “parenting-threats” you make to a child. As I listened in I thought how difficult it must be to consistently do that, especially if following through with the consequence adds an element of stress or difficulty to your situation. A quick interrogation of the Google machine turned up hundreds, if not thousands, of relevant blog posts […]

What Medical School Doesn’t Teach Us

Defeated, Confused, Sad Doctor

In the course of our work as doctors we will undoubtedly witness events that change the life of our patients, but coming into medical school I never realized how directly some of these events would also change my life.  Often in medicine we see people at the worst possible time. Our patients are usually sick or grieving and rarely happy to be in our presence, no matter how great we might think we are. More […]

Interviewing for Medical School

As a member of the admission’s committee at our school and as someone who recently(ish) went through the application and interview process (twice), I get asked a lot if I have any advice for those in the midst of attempting to get into medical school. I’m a bit long winded (I know, you’re shocked), so I thought I’d write out my typical answers here to avoid pushing my Tweet count any higher than it already […]

Married In Medical School – MomMD Cross Post

Shift Change on MomMD

In Good Times & In Bad – Married In Medical School What’s it like to be married in medical school? My answer is always the same – it’s really fine, but I don’t have anything to compare it to since I was married before I began the process of forgetting basic math, spelling & grammar in order to make room for the Kreb’s Cycle, mechanism of action of Lamivudine and 22q11 deletions. However, I do […]

About The Author

I'm an ObGyn. I started this blog as a medical student (some would call that doctor school) and now I'm working as an Ob/Gyn, which is seriously the coolest job ever. I'm a twin mom and recently added a baby brudder to the mix. My life story through November 2010 can be viewed here. The events in the many years following can be summed up as wedding bells, books, exams, babies, and doctoring. I started this blog in hopes of landing a role in a Lifetime movie so I could quit medicine and move to Hollywood, but that hasn't happened...so if you wouldn't take medical advice from Angelina Jolie, you shouldn't take it from me. I may not even be a real person. In fact, I'm probably a spambot. Or possibly a 15 yo boy blogging from a dingy basement. If you're really interested you can read more about me here. If you have any questions or want to guest post contact me.
