One Year Blog-O-Versary

Today is my 1 Year Blogging Anniversary!

One Year Ago I:

  • Wrote a post that started with “I have no idea if I’ll start writing here regularly.”
  • Was a 2nd year Medical Student who had written 4 blog posts ever (and it took all of four entire years to get those travesties to blogging out).
  • Had zero subscribers, less than 10 visitors and less than 100 followers on Twitter.
  • Used Blogger to publish my posts, the blog looked like this.
  • Was embarrassed to tell people I knew that I wrote here.
  • Never imagined I’d be here writing this to y’all in 365 days.

Today I:

  • Wrote a post that started with “Today is my 1 Year Blogging Anniversary”
  • Am a 3rd year Medical Student who has written just over 100 blog posts in the past year.
  • Have around 250 subscribers and over 20,000 visits and am nearing 1,000 followers on Twitter.
  • Use WordPress.org as my backend publishing and have my own URL.
  • Am deeply humbled and  flattered when people I know in real life say they enjoy my blog.
  • Have no idea where I’ll be blog-wise in one year and am so excited to see.

Thank you so much or being such amazing supporters over the past 12 months. So many wonderful opportunities and friendships have come from this blog – a published post on KevinMD, a MomMD blog that you guys named for me, public support from the Texas Medical Associate Medical Student Section, opportunities to collaborate with some of the most influential doctors and medical students in social media, the chance to connect with medical students and doctors from around the world through the Medical Education Monday series, a brand new position as an iMedicalApps staff writer and so much more.

I never dreamed these types of opportunities would be available to me and I honestly only have y’all to thank. I’ve learned so much and had SO much fun. I truly think the investment I’ve made into Social Media is worth so much.

Alright, enough sappy, mushy goo for one day, since it’s my birthday we’re gonna talk gifts.

Will you humor me by answering 6 simple questions as my blogging birthday gift? Come onnn, I never onlyoccasionally beg y’all for stuff…and it’s my blogging birfffdayyyy…and it would make me ohsohappy…and it won’t cost you a million bucks.

I mean, if you have a million bucks and you’d rather give me that I’d appreciate it as well, but while my bank processes your hot check, answer these questions…it’ll help me out in civil court and stuff.

  1. Who are you?
  2. Where are you from? (country, state, town, whatever is fine)
  3. Why do you read this and/or how’d you find Mind On Medicine?
  4. What would you like to see more or less of around here?
  5. Do you have a favorite post on Mind On Med? (it’s ok to say no or skip this one)
  6. Who’s your biggest inspiration or favorite blogger?

If you don’t want to post a comment, will you send me your answers on Twitter or by email to MindOnMed@gmail.com? And yes, Mom – even you should answer them.

I found your blog through another Med Student blog. I can’t remember which one. :)
What would you like to see more or less of around here?
Just more about how you juggle class and life. What study habits work for you, and
how your rotations work. I’m thinking about starting a post bacc pre med program and
am always interested to hear how the nuts and bolts work.

  • Who are you? – Jessica

Where are you from? – Originally, Medicine Hat, AB, Canada. Google it. We’ve got the world’s biggest teepee, BOOyah.

Why do you read this and/or how’d you find Mind On Medicine? – I was flipping about one day, avoiding studying, and I found this awesome Texan who was pretty much doing the same thing. Instant love.

What would you like to see more or less of around here? – I love the reviews of each clerkship rotation! Great stuff to read as a pre-clinical girl.

Do you have a favorite post on Mind On Med? – Probably either “Then I Broke an Old Lady’s Zygomatic Process” or “Longest 24 Years of My Life.” Classic.

Who’s your biggest inspiration or favorite blogger? – I read depressingly few blogs, let’s go with inspiration. My clinical skills preceptor from first year really taught me how to be a healer as well as a scholar, really excellent guy. And the numerous patients I’ve had the pleasure and honor of meeting – some of them will certainly stay with me forever.

Do you have a favorite post on Mind On Med? (it’s ok to say no or skip this one) its not as much a post as a series. I love the Meded Mondays and wish more of them keep coming. Its fun to read about the medical schools in other places!
Who’s your biggest inspiration or favorite blogger? Difficult question. There are soooo many. Dr Ves, ZDogg, Dr Vartabedian, Dr Val Jones, Dr Nick Genes, Jim of StorytellERdoc, Berci of ScienceRoll (the first med blog I started to read), Grunt Doc, Kevin MD (of course!), Dr Grumpy… the list goes on and on and on…

  • Who are you? Mike

Where are you from? Chicago, IL (now Indianapolis, IN)

Why do you read this and/or how’d you find Mind On Medicine?

I read because I like social media, I like medical education (more importantly the people who are being medically educated –> med students and residents) and I find what is written to be interesting and thought-provoking. One of my colleagues (DJ aka @MedPedsDoctor) at IU turned me on to this blog.

What would you like to see more or less of around here? I say keep doin’ what you do best.

Do you have a favorite post on Mind On Med? (it’s ok to say no or skip this one)

I am a big fan of pop culture and not as big of a fan of biochemistry so I must vote for Gluco$e…Like Ke$ha. the story behind that post is why I got in to medical education and the type of educator I hope to be.

Who’s your biggest inspiration or favorite blogger?

It will sound like sucking up but I am now inspired by you. My initial goals when I got started with social media stuff was to give Grand Rounds somewhere besides my home program. Now it is to get a gig as a guest blogger somewhere. I also am inspired by MD2B because I remember when I was a medical student I would not have been savvy enough to be a med student and an insightful blogger writer like both of you are.

  • 1.Who are you? Dani

2.Where are you from? (country, state, town, whatever is fine) Grew up in Nebraska, med school in Missouri, clinical rotations in Michigan….yeah, globe trotter a bit?

4.What would you like to see more or less of around here? I enjoy reading your posts about life and medicine because I’m living the same thing.

5.Do you have a favorite post on Mind On Med? (it’s ok to say no or skip this one) I haven’t read them all but I enjoy your sarcasm/witty remarks and the occasional nerd bomb.

6.Who’s your biggest inspiration or favorite blogger?

  • Who are you?
    Violet :)
Where are you from? (country, state, town, whatever is fine)
    United Kingdom
Why do you read this and/or how’d you find Mind On Medicine?
I can’t quite remember, I’m a fan of med student / doctor blogs so I must have found your blog from a link from someone else’s.
What would you like to see more or less of around here?
I really like your clinically-related posts. The photos are good too. :)
Do you have a favorite post on Mind On Med? (it’s ok to say no or skip this one)
The post that explains that “I’m going to med school” does not mean “I’m training to be a nurse”. Seriously people, get with the program!
Who’s your biggest inspiration or favorite blogger?
Hmmm, I read lots of blogs but the ones I enjoy most are the ones that are personal, and sarcastic, and funny. I’m interested in research, education and politics too but I like reading about people’s opinions of them, and not just the facts.

Hope you had a lovely blog birthday! :)

  • Who are you? Mirna

Where are you from? (country, state, town, whatever is fine) Indonesia

Why do you read this and/or how’d you find Mind On Medicine?
From your twitter account. Been following some other med students’ twitter account and you do have interesting posts on twitter, wasn’t surprised that you also have nice posts too in your blog! :)

What would you like to see more or less of around here?
let’s see,,,more about maintaining normal life / having an awesome social life and at the same time brilliant score on medschool? lol I enjoy reading all your posts here so far though.

Do you have a favorite post on Mind On Med? (it’s ok to say no or skip this one)
This might sound unusual but I love reading the post about you made a beautiful kitchen island out from a boring desk. I am totally inspired by your idea of re-furnishing the desk and making it come true. Not that I’m interested to do it anytime in the future. Technical stuff isn’t my thing.

Who’s your biggest inspiration or favorite blogger?
Oh well, I read the blogs from Medscape, and I do read some blogs which are totally outside medical stuff, particularly about cooking and fashion.

  • I was curious if you ever thought of changing the page layout of your site?
Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.

But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better.
Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or 2 images.

Maybe you could space it out better?

About The Author

I’m a Medical Student (that means I'm in school to become a doctor). My life story can be viewed here. I started this blog in hopes of landing a role in a Lifetime movie so I could quit school and move to Hollywood, so if you wouldn't take medical advice from Angelina Jolie, you shouldn't take it from me. I may not even be a real person. In fact I'm probably a spambot. Or a 15 yo boy blogging from a dingy basement. If you're really interested you can read more about me here. If you have any questions or want to guest post contact me.
