Relatively easy question as a segue into an important blog post for tomorrow: An 18-year-old girl visits her college student health office for a required physical. She complains of irritableness and concerns about decision-making now that she has left home. On exam she appears exceedingly thin, with decreased muscle mass and dry skin. She is hypotensive, with resting bradycardia. What other finding is most likely to be present? A. Calluses on her hands/fingersB. Dental erosionsC. HirsutismD. […]
Our family! Well, I’m back from my almost 2 week Thanksgiving blogging hiatus. I know you’ve all been sitting around since November 17 throwing a party wondering what I’m up to, so I’m here to force you to read some more about my life. I failed the second test of my life (both of which have been in med school). It was only by 7 tenths of a point, though and I think I’ll get at […]
Congrats to Scarlett who answered yesterday’s Trivia Tuesday question correctly! Virtual high five for being brave enough to answer AND for being right! CA-125: Our patient would have been diagnosed with “Papillary Serous Cystadenocarcinoma” of the ovaries, or simply – ovarian cancer. This specific type of ovarian cancer is the most common malignant ovarian tumor in US women over the age of 20, accounting for about 26% of malignant ovarian cancer cases. CA-125 is a […]
Very little interesting material is flowing from brain to fingers today, so I’m officially instating what will henceforth be known as Trivia Tuesday. I’m a medical student so these will probably usually be some sort of really boring USMLE style question with multiple choice answers, but you never know when I might throw out a random question about coconuts and their associated death rates. Pick your answer and the winner gets a virtual high five. […]
It has been brought to my attention that you nosy people the 3 people who read my blog would like to know more about me. Well, that’s just too dang bad – I’m going stealth – none of you will ever know my true identity. Okay, that’s a lie and not only because I think anonymous blogging is dumb in the absence of supremely defined motives (i.e. blogging about more important things than I ramble about here) […]
My Twitter-friend @MarianneDiNaps has a freakin’ sweet blog (http://blog.timesunion.com/mdtobe) and has gotten me thinking about what to blog on today. I linked her blog so all of my two readers – Mom, Dad – check out Marianne’s blog – could go read what she has to say. What can I say? I like to help a sister out with her blog traffic. So, babies. Aww….I love babies they are so cute. In fact, I might end […]
Well, my plan today was to write something hilarious so it could go viral and a bazillion people would be following my boring blog by the time I pulled my lazy self out of bed in the morning. Alas, here I am to write about a heavy subject that nobody wants to talk about – suicide. Seven years ago I went to prom, as friends, with a guy that was a year older than me. […]
I’m an Ob/Gyn resident (that means I went to medical school to become a doctor) and now I'm working like a crazy person to learn my trade before I'm on my own in the wild. Once upon a time I birthed a couple of babies of my own, they're friggin' adorable twin toddlers now. My life story through November 2010 can be viewed here. The events in the many years following can be summed up as wedding bells, books, exams, babies, and doctoring. I only started this blog in hopes of landing a role in a Lifetime movie so I could quit medicine and move to Hollywood, so if you wouldn't take medical advice from Angelina Jolie, you shouldn't take it from me. I may not even be a real person. In fact, I'm probably a spambot. Or possibly a 15 yo boy blogging from a dingy basement. If you're really interested you can read more about me here. If you have any questions or want to guest post contact me.
